There are a number of myths surrounding health & safety, one of the most popular being that “conkers” players are obliged to wear gloves and safety goggles! The truth is, a well-meaning head teacher advocated the use of PPE and ensuing negative publicity started the myth. Of course none of this had anything to do with official directives. Sadly, the “bonkers conkers” myth is typical of many peoples understanding of and attitude to health & safety. In reality, adopting the the right attitude and behaviour can go a long way to keeping yourself and your colleagues safe in the workplace.

DON’T BE BONKERS. AVOID THE WORST

Stairway to Heaven?

Statistics reveal that in the UK, one person each week is killed in an accident involving ladders. Your employer has a legal duty to ensure your safety when working at height. It is your duty to follow the rules. If a ladder has to be used, check it for defects and make sure it can’t slip by placing it on a firm, stable surface. Have someone hold it at the base, or use an anti-slip device. Set the ladder at the correct angle, ideally 75°. Avoid working off a ladder, but if you must, never off the top three rungs. Think before you climb and heaven can wait!

THINK BEFORE YOU CLIMB. AVOID THE WORST

Being laid-up with a bad back is no fun, so avoid injury by always using a safe lifting technique… Take your time and plan ahead. Clear a path. Lift close to your body. Ensure you have a firm hold and can see over the load. Your feet must be shoulder width apart. Bend your knees and keep your back straight. Practice the motion before lifting. Tighten your stomach muscles. Lift with your legs. Don’t twist or bend. Face in the direction you are walking.

THINK BEFORE YOU LIFT. AVOID THE WORST

Coming round, dazed and confused in A&E could be just the start of your problems! Permanent disability, loss of employment or at the very least, loss of earnings, are the stark reality for thousands of people injured in the workplace every year. Good systems alone are not always enough to prevent accidents. Real safety is determined by the vigilance and behaviour of each and every one of us…

WORK RESPONSIBLY. AVOID THE WORST
