A third of all injuries at work such as broken bones, serious burns and loss of consciousness are due to someone slipping, tripping or falling. The foundations to safety at work is good housekeeping, it's where you can make a real difference. Deal with any problem you see immediately if you can. If you can't, then warn others and report it immediately. Don't clown around when it comes to the safety of yourself and your colleagues - take the right steps to remove slip, trip and fall hazards from the workplace.

Everyone should know what the rules are, and stick to them. Always work safely, take personal responsibility and set an example to others. Make safety as important as any other work or personal priority. Nobody should be afraid to question anything that they think could result in an accident. Human error is frequently the root cause of accidents, but faulty equipment, faulty processes and unsafe surroundings can also be to blame. Any incident in the workplace which might have resulted in injury, damage or fatality, should be considered, 'a near miss' and must always be reported. Talk to your Safety Rep, Supervisor or Manager if you have any concerns about safety. Never turn a blind eye to unsafe practices, behaviour or conditions, - if you do, the joke could be on you!

Personal Protective Equipment or PPE describes all equipment, including clothing, intended to protect you when at work. Engineering controls and safe systems do not guarantee a hazard free workplace, so PPE really is your last line of defence against illness or injury. The law states that relevant PPE must be provided free of charge by your employer and that you are obliged to co-operate by wearing it and using it properly. Taking responsibility for your personal safety by always wearing your PPE is common sense - anything else is just not funny.

Slips and trips in the workplace cause serious injury to over 11000 people each year. This accounts for a third of all major injuries at work. 75% of these are caused by poor housekeeping so it's imperative that you clean up hazards at once, keep walkways clear and store materials and tools properly. Work tidy and always watch your step.

Practice the motion before you lift. Tighten your stomach muscles. Lift with your legs. Don't twist or bend. Face in the direction you are walking. Avoid serious injury by following this easy technique for lifting and carrying.

Statistics reveal that in the UK, one person each week is killed in an accident involving ladders. Your employer has a legal duty to ensure your safety when working at height. It is your duty to follow the rules. If a ladder has to be used, check it for defects and make sure it can't slip by placing it on a firm, stable surface. Have someone hold it at the base, or use an anti-slip device. Set
the ladder at the correct angle, ideally 75°. Avoid working off a ladder, but if you must, never off the top three rungs. Think before you climb and heaven can wait!

There are a number of myths surrounding health & safety, one of the most popular being that "conkers" players are obliged to wear gloves and safety goggles! The truth is, a well-meaning head teacher advocated the use of PPE and ensuing negative publicity started the myth. Of course none of this had anything to do with official directives. Sadly, the "bonkers conkers" myth is typical of many peoples understanding of and attitude to health & safety. In reality, adopting the the right attitude and behaviour can go a long way
to keeping yourself and your colleagues safe in the workplace.
